Panama Human Rights welcomed the constructive diplomatic dialogue.

Updated: Nov 12, 2019

Panama human rights welcomed the constructive diplomatic dialogue with the UK Ambassador to Panama, but sadly 8 months have lapsed and the Embassy to Panama has failed to respond to Mr Tuffney. Panama promotes itself as an advocate for human rights. We at Panama human rights find that this government is not fulfilling its true commitment, and is in violation of international law governed by the United Nations constitution and should be disbarred as a member until they take human rights seriously.

Civil Judicial Procedures and Remedies

Citizens have access to the courts to bring lawsuits seeking damages for, or cessation of, human rights violations, although most do not pursue such lawsuits due to the length of the process.

There are administrative and judicial remedies for alleged wrongs, and authorities often grant them to citizens who followed through with the process. The court can order civil remedies, including fair compensation to the individual injured.

Individuals or organizations may initiate cases involving violations of an individual’s human rights by submitting petitions to the IACHR, which in turn may submit the case to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights

Meeting held at the Panamanian Embassy in London.

Corruption and Lack of Transparency in Government

The law provides criminal penalties for corruption by officials, and the government generally implemented these laws effectively; however, there were allegations that government officials and members of the previous government administration engaged in corrupt practices with impunity. Corruption remained a problem in the executive, judicial, and legislative branches as well as in the security forces.
